Did you know Lincoln University in Pennsylvania is the first institution of higher education founded for African-Americans? It paved the way for the 104 other historically black colleges, which have produced distinguished alums like Thurgood Marshall, Spike Lee, and the almighty Oprah.

Did you know in 1992, Dr. Mae Jemison became the first African American woman to go into space aboard the space shuttle Endeavor? During her eight-day mission, she worked with U.S. and Japanese researchers, and was a co-investigator on a bone cell experiment. Wow! Way to go Mae!

Did you know John Mercer Langston was the first black man to become a lawyer when he passed the bar in Ohio in 1854? When he was elected to the post of Town Clerk for Brownhelm, Ohio, in 1855 Langston became one of the first African Americans ever elected to public office in America. John Mercer Langston was also the great-uncle of Langston Hughes, famed poet of the Harlem Renaissance. Way to go John!

There are many examples of successful black women in the modern day, including Oprah, Tyra Banks, and countless others. But did you know that the first female self-made millionaire was a black woman? Madam C. J. Walker, born with the name of Sarah Breedlove, was the wealthiest African-American woman at the time of her death. Madam Walker built her wealth by developing a line of beauty and hair care products for black women. Aside from being an entrepreneur, she was also known as a philanthropist and made great contributions to the cause of education of black women to help them become financially independent and successful. Way to go Madam Walker!

President’s Day – No School

Friday, February 15, 2019
Thurgood Marshall is a must-know figure in Black history. He was the first African-American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. But as a kid, he was mischievous, and was once forced to write copies of the Constitution as punishment for his misbehavior. He later said that punishment piqued his interest in the Constitution. As a young adult, he applied to his hometown law school at the University of Maryland, but was denied entrance because of being Black. He later sued the school and won. And before he became a judge, he was a successful attorney who, most famously, won the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education case, which ended school segregation. Way to go Thurgood!

Happy Spirit Day!  It is awesome to see all of the students dressed in their Bomber gear!  We would also like to announce our TOP Person of Pride winners for the month of February.
-Ms. Cron was nominated for all of the extra help that she did for Dental Safari letters that are went home with EVERY child in this school.  It is quite a task and she came offering with any help.
-Mrs. Cole: She empowers others to help themselves. She can teach you how to make a filter for student tracking and even how to print labels from iNOW. She can answer pretty much any question you have and if she can't, she will tell you who will know! Mrs. Cole really is a lifesaver and chances are she played a role in some miraculous turnout from a disaster!

I would like to recognize a young man who has shown a big heart at his cousin’s house last night.  Dominick S. (3rd grade) was eating dinner when some food became lodged in his throat.  Zander R. (2nd grade) noticed he was having a difficult time breathing. Yes, Dominick was choking.  Zander wasted no time and performed the Heimlich maneuver on him. The food that was lodged was dislodged before Dominick’s dad made it to him.  Way to go Zander and Way to show your care and compassion.  I understand Zander read on a poster how to do the Heimlich on a person. Zander and Dominick please come to the office.

A woman called Moses? You bet. Harriet Tubman was born a slave but later escaped to Philadelphia, only to return to Maryland to rescue her family. But she didn’t stop there. She earned the name Moses because she risked her life traveling at night helping hundreds of Southern slaves escape to the north and Canada through a network of safe people and safe houses called the Underground Railroad. Way to go Harriet!

Good morning, BV! Today is Wednesday, Feb. 6th. How many of you are humble? If you don’t know what that means, it means you are proud of what you can do and what you have but you don’t have to tell or “show off” to others. When you show off, or brag, about things you have to others who may not be as fortunate, people will stop liking you. People who are humble are liked by others. So be humble by showing others how you can help, not how you can “show off” and have a great day!

I have Sophia C. here for a little information about Black History Month- (read by student) Do you love peanut butter? If so, did you know peanut butter was invented by, George Washington Carver, a famous African American, who discovered 400 uses for peanuts, soybeans, sweet potatoes, and pecans. In the process, he transformed lunchtime sandwiches forever. Yum! Thanks George!

Good morning, BV! Today is Tuesday, Feb. 5th. Since we returned from Christmas break – almost 5 weeks ago – we have seen many students forgetting the 3 Big Ideas and being disrespectful towards teachers, teasing and bullying other students, cheating and lying about tests and homework, and even stealing. PBIS teaches us that these behaviors are hateful and wrong. Students who are respectful, responsible, and ready to learn will be enjoying all the privileges that go along with making good choices. Please think about that before you choose a behavior that is wrong. Practice the 3 Big Ideas every day

(Read by student)   Did you know that the first licensed African American Female pilot was named Bessie Coleman? Born in Atlanta, Texas in 1892, Bessie Coleman grew up in a world of harsh poverty, discrimination and segregation. She moved to Chicago at 23 to seek her fortune, but found little opportunity there as well. Wild tales of flying exploits from returning WWI soldiers first inspired her to explore aviation, but she faced a double stigma in that dream being both African American and a woman. After earning her pilot’s license in 1921, Coleman performed at numerous airshows over the next five years, performing heart thrilling stunts, encouraging other African Americans to pursue flying, and refusing to perform where Blacks were not admitted.  Way to go Bessie!

Good Morning Belle Valley, Today is Monday, February 4th.  In honor of February being Black History Month,

Did you know that Black History Month is celebrated annually in the United States, Canada, in the United Kingdom and in Germany? It is also known as African-American History Month in the United States. The purpose of this month is to remember both the important people of African descent and the important events in Black history. In an effort to honor this expansive and growing history, Black History Month was established by way of a weekly celebration in February known as “Negro History Week” by historian Carter G. Woodson. But just as Black history is more than a month, so too are the numerous events and figures that are often overlooked during it. Throughout the month of February, stay tuned for more information and facts about famous African Americans and how they have made their mark on the world.
